Alaska governor orders probe into Peltola campaign over second Dan Sullivan
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered an investigation into Democrat Mary Peltola's Senate campaign after a New York Times report that senior advisers to her campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee helped recruit Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., who shares his name with Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan.[5, 29] President Donald Trump called for Peltola to be prosecuted by the Department of Justice and thrown off the ballot.[5, 79] The Justice Department is reported to have issued subpoenas in response to allegations that Peltola's campaign collaborated with party operatives to get the same-name challenger on the ballot.[8, 68]
Peltola dismissed the Times report as a "distraction" to sell papers, while The New York Post reported she did not fully deny personal involvement even as her campaign distanced itself.[53, 57] Alaska election officials said new revelations about the recruitment effort do not change their opposition to a Trump administration lawsuit seeking to potentially delay certification.[41]
Why it matters The Justice Department has issued subpoenas in the case, and House Republicans have opened their own investigation.[8, 70]
