Supermarket freezers in Europe hit by suspected cyberattack

Supermarket chains in Sweden, Belgium and other European countries reported sudden temperature rises in their fridges and freezers on Monday, in what they suspect was a cyberattack.[2, 5, 8] The Guardian reported that dozens of stores were affected and linked the incidents to an October attack on French stores that caused millions of euros of food losses.[2]

Some supermarkets disposed of spoiled food, the New York Post reported.[20] The affected countries reported by outlets include Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Estonia and Ireland, though accounts differ on the full list.[5, 30, 33]

Why it matters Supermarkets have had to dispose of spoiled food after temperatures rose in their cooling systems.[20]
