Lula wins fourth term in Brazil as Bolsonaro rejects result
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a historic fourth term on Sunday, defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a runoff election, Brazil's electoral court said.[20, 27] With 100% of the vote counted, the electoral court announced Lula had a lead of nearly 4.4 million votes; Democracy Now! reported the margin as 4 million votes, and The Daily Wire reported the result as 51.8% to 48.2%.[1, 18, 35] Lula had lost the first round to Bolsonaro three weeks earlier, making the win a comeback that defied polls and prediction markets that had favored Bolsonaro.[8, 16, 40]
President Trump said Monday that the Brazilian election looked 'rigged' and 'corrupt.'[14, 37] The result triggered a sharp sell-off in Brazilian and international financial markets Monday, with Brazil's main stock index dropping to a two-month low.[25, 36] Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro; Democracy Now! reported the elder Bolsonaro remains under house arrest for plotting a coup against Lula, while The Hill reported he is serving a 27-year prison sentence.[1, 23]
