Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race
Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for Michigan's U.S. Senate seat on Sunday, two days before Election Day, after appearing with him at Perfecting Church, a Pentecostal congregation in Detroit.[8, 19, 54] Stevens, who lost the Democratic primary to nominee Abdul El-Sayed in August by a narrow margin, had previously said she was supporting the Democratic ticket.[22, 32] The rupture followed a public clash between Stevens and El-Sayed over an outside group's ad about Israel, and Fox News reported that El-Sayed's campaign withdrew her invitation over what it called the antisemitic ad dispute.[5, 44]
Rep. Jim Clyburn's office pushed back Saturday after El-Sayed's campaign reportedly sought to keep Stevens away from his events, saying she remained invited to the Sunday church appearance.[40] Stevens defended the move, telling reporters in Detroit, "I'm not turning my back on Democrats. It is this one vote."[35] Daily Kos reported the August primary featured more than $30 million in spending by groups affiliated with the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC supporting Stevens.[3]
Why it matters Stevens' congressional staff began resigning almost immediately after she announced the endorsement.[8]
