Trump attacks El-Sayed's Muslim faith at Michigan Senate rally
President Donald Trump attacked Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed's Muslim faith and Egyptian heritage at a Sunday campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, calling him a "jihadist."[11, 12, 18] Trump said El-Sayed "should not be allowed to serve in our Senate" and would "invite hordes of jihadis to our shores," according to Breitbart and The New York Times.[9, 18] Bloomberg reported Trump repeatedly portrayed the Michigan-born El-Sayed as sympathetic to Islamic extremism without offering evidence for his allegations.[11]
El-Sayed is locked in a dead heat against Republican Mike Rogers, according to NBC News.[13] At a rally in Grand Rapids, El-Sayed fired back, telling supporters Trump will be calling him "Senator Mohamed" if he wins in November.[17, 22]
Rogers said on "Meet the Press" that he never called El-Sayed a "terrorist."[16] Former President Barack Obama campaigned for Michigan Democrats a day earlier and warned of division, according to Salon.[6]
Why it matters Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers publicly distanced himself from the attacks, telling NBC's "Meet the Press" he never called El-Sayed a "terrorist."[16]
