Washington resident dies in first US bird flu death of 2026
A Washington state resident has died after contracting bird flu, the first U.S. death from the virus this year, local health officials said Sunday.[1, 2, 3 +2] The individual, a Yakima County resident, was hospitalized after being exposed to avian influenza at a dairy with infected cattle.[1, 5] The Washington Examiner and The Guardian reported the person had underlying health conditions.[1, 5]
The Guardian quoted officials describing the person as hospitalized with "severe illness."[1] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the risk to the general public is low and urges precautions for those in contact with sick or dead birds.[2]
