Scientists report finding fossilized red blood cells in dinosaur bone

Researchers report finding what appear to be fossilized red blood cells in the 115-million-year-old leg bone of a Brazilian Aratasaurus dinosaur.[1, 2] Chemical tests on the bone identified heme, the organic compound that allows hemoglobin in blood to carry oxygen around the body, according to The Guardian.[1]

IJR reported that researchers found mineralized structures resembling red blood cells along with chemical traces of heme.[2] Some experts remain skeptical, cautioning that the structures have not been definitively identified as blood cells.[2, 3]
