Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens endorses Republican Mike Rogers for Senate
Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's U.S. Senate race on Sunday, two days before the midterm election.[49, 55, 100] Stevens lost the Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed in August, and the endorsement escalates their feud in the final days of the campaign.[3, 48, 49] Rogers is a candidate President Donald Trump has endorsed, and Trump praised Stevens and said he would welcome her to the Republican Party, alongside House Speaker Mike Johnson.[48, 71, 95 +1]
Democrats condemned the move: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called it a terrible decision, some House Democrats want Stevens expelled from the caucus, and one lawmaker said she hoped Stevens would not return to work on Tuesday.[34, 51, 54 +1] The Guardian reported that Trump called El-Sayed a "jihadist" as the endorsement drew attention to the race.[22]
Why it matters House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Democrats will discuss "next steps" for Stevens when Congress reconvenes next week.[51, 91]
