Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado returns from exile
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on Sunday after roughly 10 months in exile, announcing her arrival on social media with the words "I am here. With you."[1, 15, 18] She had left the country in December, and CBS News reported she covertly left with a private U.S. rescue team to accept the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in Norway.[8, 32] Her departure came about a month before the U.S. military deposed then-President Nicolás Maduro, according to PBS NewsHour and the Washington Examiner.[12, 26]
Bloomberg and the Financial Times described her return as a challenge to the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez, which the outlets said is backed by the Trump administration.[6, 31] PBS NewsHour reported that the interim president has exceeded the time she was authorized to serve, with no election scheduled.[12]
The Wall Street Journal reported that Machado is pushing for presidential elections and that her arrival threatens to complicate President Trump's plans for Venezuela.[21] Fox News reported that opposition figure Edmundo González has vowed to join her and push for democratic elections.[19]
