James O'Keefe and Cam Higby charged with unlawful voting in Minnesota
Conservative influencers James O'Keefe and Cam Higby were charged Wednesday with felony counts of unlawful voting and identity theft in Minnesota.[3, 15, 17] Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced the charges, saying Minnesota law bars misrepresenting one's identity when applying for a ballot.[14, 16, 17] The charges stem from an August primary stunt in which the men, members of the Florida-based O'Keefe Media Group, wore disguises and used hidden cameras at polling places.[3, 8, 18]
The Guardian reported they disguised themselves in what they called "Muslim garb" and claimed to be local voters.[7] Prosecutors say the men misrepresented their identities while seeking ballots, though neither cast a vote, according to IJR.[18] The men say the stunt was intended to expose weaknesses in election rules, and videos of it were posted online.[11, 18, 21]
Why it matters Each man faces felony counts of unlawful voting and identity theft announced by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.[16, 17]
