US war with Iran has cost $47 billion, Pentagon estimate shows
The Pentagon's latest estimate puts the cost of the U.S. war with Iran at $47.1 billion through Oct. 16, up more than 25% from the Defense Department's July estimate, according to Reuters and the New York Times.[1, 4, 11] The Hill reported the cost rose by more than $3 billion since last month, with munitions replacement the largest chunk at $29 billion.[10] The New York Times reported bombs, missiles and other munitions accounted for more than 60% of expenses.[4]
Trump said the war will end 'whenever I want it to end,' offering no deadline, and has said new strikes on Iran are an option after the midterms.[6, 7, 8 +1] Iran called Qatar's draft proposal to end the war 'unacceptable,' NewsNation reported.[13] MS NOW reported the actual cost is significantly larger than the Pentagon's estimate, and the Daily Beast noted the war is in its ninth month despite Trump's initial assurances it would last only a few weeks.[2, 3]
Why it matters The Pentagon has told Congress the war has surpassed $47 billion, and Trump is weighing additional strikes on Iran after the November 3 midterm elections.[8, 12]
