Alonso stands by criticism of F1 driving standards after Albon clash
Fernando Alonso doubled down on his criticism of driving standards in Formula 1 after a first-lap collision with Alex Albon at the US Grand Prix in Austin.[1, 4] Alonso said the quality of drivers in the lower third of the field is very low and that those targeted know who they are.[1, 14]
Albon responded that the criticism was not nice to hear and dismissed the claims, saying F1 has no more pay drivers.[6] The Race reported that Alonso's rivals pushed back against his claim about the quality of drivers at the back of the grid.[14]
Why it matters Alonso's Aston Martin floor was left with permanent damage and less downforce after the clash, costing him a competitive weekend.[1, 6]
