Rain cancels MotoGP's final Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island
MotoGP cancelled Sunday's Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island due to poor weather, ending the venue's run of nearly three decades hosting the race.[1, 3, 4] Al Jazeera reported the race was delayed by two hours before being cancelled due to low visibility, despite a sellout crowd.[2] The Guardian reported the cancellation denied Marc Márquez the chance to stretch his world championship lead over the injured Jorge Martin.[1]
Marco Bezzecchi said it was "amazing" to see how many people were still at Phillip Island when MotoGP made its parade lap.[5] Riders expressed regret, with Motorsport Week reporting the grid called it "not the farewell Phillip Island deserved".[6]
Championship organisers explained why the main race was not rescheduled for Saturday despite the poor weather forecast, as had been done in 2023.[7] The Australian race will relocate to a Melbourne street circuit next year.[1]
