Fire guts Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' retreat in the Bavarian Alps; man arrested
A fire gutted the Eagle's Nest, the Nazi-era guesthouse and former mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps.[1, 2, 4] Around 200 firefighters were dispatched to the site on Friday evening and found it completely ablaze, the Daily Mail reported, according to the Daily Beast.[1] Police said no one was injured, the Daily Beast reported.[1]
A 33-year-old man was arrested in connection with the blaze on suspicion of arson; Fox News reported he showed signs of mental illness.[2, 4, 5] Police said firefighting efforts were hampered by local conditions.[3] The Daily Caller reported that officers detained a motorcyclist near the site.[6]
Why it matters Police said the structure, a tourist attraction for decades, is probably not salvageable.[2]
