Murkowski endorses Democrat Kreiss-Tomkins in Alaska governor's race
Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski endorsed Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, a former state lawmaker, in Alaska's governor's race on Tuesday.[3, 7] She passed over three Republican candidates, including Bernadette Wilson, whom President Donald Trump endorsed earlier this month.[3, 7, 8] The announcement came one week before Election Day, according to NBC News.[6, 14]
In a statement released by Kreiss-Tomkins' campaign, Murkowski praised his commitment to bipartisanship and urged voters to set partisan politics aside.[7, 16] MS NOW reported that Murkowski argued Alaskans are seeking "something different" after eight years under term-limited Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy.[2] Mediaite reported the endorsement came days after Trump called Murkowski a "DISGRACE" to the state and the country.[5]
Why it matters The endorsement backs the only Democrat on Alaska's ranked choice ballot one week before Election Day.[6, 16]
