U.S. cruise ship suspends world voyage in Cambodia over fuel costs
The MV Odyssey halted its residential round-the-world voyage in Cambodia, stranding about 200 passengers whose cabins were their homes. The operator said monthly fuel expenses more than tripled, and it will disembark passengers and restructure.[6, 9, 10] The Florida-based operator Villa Vie Residences said it would disembark passengers and crew and restructure its business.[9] Passengers had bought cabins as permanent floating homes, with lifetime suites marketed for over $230,000, The Daily Beast reported.[3]
Fortune reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin that historically averaged $1,800 reached $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia due to the Iran war; HuffPost likewise reported the operator said monthly fuel expenses more than tripled because of the war in Iran.[1, 10] The ship began its voyage from Belfast, Northern Ireland, two years ago and remains docked at Sihanoukville on the Gulf of Thailand with no certain departure date, according to The Hill.[13]
Why it matters Passengers lost their floating homes and are working with the operator on temporary living arrangements while the ship remains docked with no certain departure date.[13, 19]
