Pelosi calls Mamdani's and El-Sayed's Israel comments 'wrong'
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed over their past comments on Israel, calling them 'concerning' and 'wrong.'[1, 4, 5 +1] Pelosi said the two men's views are not reflective of House Democrats.[4] The New York Times reported that she criticized both over their refusal to endorse a Jewish state.[1]
The Washington Examiner reported that El-Sayed refused to say Israel should exist, and described the criticism as notable pushback in a battleground race from one of the party's top power players.[7] Newsweek reported that El-Sayed has previously said there is a responsibility to tackle 'antisemitism in all of its forms wherever we see it.'[2]
The New York Post reported that Pelosi initially denied that anyone in the Democratic Party was antisemitic.[5] Breitbart reported that Pelosi said of El-Sayed's views, 'We'll see if he gets elected.'[3]
Why it matters El-Sayed is running in a battleground Michigan Senate race, and Pelosi's criticism amounts to notable pushback from one of her party's top figures.[7]
