Report says Peltola allies recruited second Dan Sullivan in Alaska race
A New York Times investigation published Wednesday reported that operatives aligned with Mary Peltola's Senate campaign spent months recruiting candidates to peel votes from Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska, including finding another man named Dan Sullivan to run against the incumbent.[5, 18] The report cites twelve sources along with text messages and documents, and describes what participants called a "ballot composition project."[22, 28] According to the Times, Elisa Rios, Peltola's former campaign manager and longtime aide, was involved, and the report says top Peltola campaign aides and DSCC officials helped recruit the second Dan Sullivan.[9, 22, 27]
Peltola's campaign and national Democrats are denying the report.[15, 26] President Donald Trump called for Peltola and the other Dan Sullivan to be thrown off the ballot, accusing Democrats of fraud.[1, 7, 11 +1] Republicans have condemned the presence of two Dan Sullivans on the ballot, calling it a ploy to split votes; both will appear on the ballot in next week's midterm elections.[4, 39]
Why it matters The DOJ wants a judge to temporarily block certification of the Alaska Senate election if incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan loses due to voter confusion.[9]
