Hegseth fires top Pentagon planner over alleged leaks
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the Joint Chiefs' director for strategy, plans and policy, the Pentagon's top military planner.[12, 19, 22] Early reports said no reason was given for the removal; hours later the Pentagon accused Sylvia of leaking classified information about the Iran war and Ukraine to the media.[22, 28, 41] Fox News reported that Sylvia allegedly failed three polygraph exams tied to the leaks, and a Pentagon official told CBS News the same.[26, 27]
Axios reported that an internal investigation report says Sylvia admitted leaking classified information about Ukraine and Iran to two reporters over a one-year period.[10] The Pentagon said it referred the leak case to the Justice Department for criminal investigation, according to The Guardian.[7] Sylvia was the second general removed from the post under Hegseth and is retiring, according to Task & Purpose.[17, 18, 29]
The firing came as President Donald Trump weighs possible renewed strikes on Iran, though several outlets reported no direct link between the personnel change and strike planning was established.[17, 28, 36] Asked about the firing, Trump appeared to mistake the male general for a woman, saying "She's got problems," according to Raw Story.[3, 6]
