Man completes 28-year walk around the world, returns home
Karl Bushby completed his decades-long walk around the world on Monday by returning to his mother's home in Hull, northern England.[4, 8] The former paratrooper left the row house in 1998 and began what became known as his Goliath Expedition in Chile on Nov. 1, 1998.[2, 5] Bushby embraced his emotional mother, Angela, outside the home, where they were surrounded by journalists, a documentary film crew and a large crowd under a banner reading "Welcome Home Son."[8]
The Guardian reported the journey spanned 29 countries and included encounters with polar bears and kidnappers as well as a spell in Russian custody.[2] The Guardian described him as the first person to walk continuously across the planet; it also noted he got lost shortly after arriving home.[2] Bushby is now 57 and left home at age 29, according to The Daily Beast.[1]
