China plans broad AI safety standards covering full life cycle
China plans a broad set of AI safety standards covering development through deployment, according to Bloomberg and The Information.[1, 2] Bloomberg described the plan as some of the most comprehensive guidelines to guard against a loss of control over increasingly powerful artificial intelligence.[1] The Information reported that China's top economic planner made the announcement on Tuesday.[2]
Wang Ruomeng, a senior official with the National Development and Reform Commission, said the country will closely monitor the impact of AI on employment, according to The Information.[2] The guidelines include safety standards and ethical guidelines covering "the whole life cycle of AI," The Information reported.[2]
Why it matters The guidelines would cover the whole life cycle of AI, from development through deployment, and China will monitor AI's impact on employment.[2]
