Carney reports progress in trade talks with Trump
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday he had a constructive conversation with President Donald Trump about a potential trade deal.[1, 5] Carney reported a "good conversation" on Nov. 1, 2026, after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, according to IJR.[4] Carney said both sides would work on a "mutually beneficial" trade deal in the weeks ahead, Bloomberg reported.[2]
He said the conversation built on recent discussions about the outlines of a deal that would create jobs, lower costs for families and protect Canada's languages, culture and sovereignty, PBS NewsHour reported.[3] The Washington Times described the call as signaling fresh momentum in a bitter trade dispute just days before the U.S. midterm elections.[5]
