UK Chancellor John Healey delivers first budget under PM Burnham
UK Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey is delivering his first budget statement under Prime Minister Andy Burnham's new administration.[1, 11, 12 +1] Healey said the budget would deliver "breathing space" for Britain, Bloomberg reported.[12] The Guardian reported Healey announced the scrapping of gas standing charges, which he said will save 60% of homes £45 a year.[1]
The Financial Times reported Healey is under pressure to tackle the cost of living crisis without alarming bond markets.[19] ABC News reported the economic backdrop is more difficult as a result of the turmoil caused by the Iran war.[11] The Guardian reported Healey said the UK faces a "difficult moment" as he prepares to deliver the budget.[1]
