UN General Assembly votes to condemn US embargo on Cuba
The UN General Assembly voted to condemn the decades-long U.S. economic embargo on Cuba, again calling for its end.[2, 8] Bloomberg reported that 23 more countries opposed the motion than before, the most ever, after a push by President Donald Trump's administration to curb support.[2] The Los Angeles Times reported that Washington's campaign to influence the outcome led a number of countries to vote against the resolution or sit out the vote for the first time.[8]
The vote came as the Trump administration intensifies its campaign to undermine Cuba's socialist government, including by threatening military intervention, according to The Washington Times.[5] The resolution is symbolic and the vote is an annual one at the United Nations.[1, 2]
Why it matters The number of countries opposing the resolution was the most ever, after the Trump administration pushed to curb support for it.[2]
