Putin praises 'genius' Musk, says Russia coordinates with him on satellites
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a "real genius" and said Russia is coordinating with the SpaceX chief and other US partners on low-Earth-orbit satellite networks.[2, 3, 4] Putin said he is in "close" contact with Musk, according to the BBC.[4] Bloomberg reported Putin made the remarks despite political tensions between Moscow and Washington.[3]
Putin spoke at a summit with African leaders in Moscow while listening to a presentation from digital development minister Maksut Shadayev.[1, 2] Shadayev said Russia is working on its own satellite system like Starlink and has already launched 30 satellites, which Putin called just a first step.[2] The Guardian reported Russia is developing its own satellite communications for its military to use against Ukraine.[1]
