Russia's Novaya Gazeta newspaper announces it is closing
The Russian independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta announced on Friday that it is closing after more than three decades.[1, 4, 7] Its editor-in-chief said "Novaya Gazeta is ceasing to exist," citing pressure from authorities and security services.[1, 4, 7] The Guardian reported that authorities recently searched the home of the newspaper's senior editor and earlier this year detained one of its journalists.[1]
The newspaper was formerly led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov, according to Bloomberg.[4] Al Jazeera reported that Moscow has classed the newspaper as a 'foreign agent'.[8]
The Economist reported that the closure came after the newspaper was placed on a state enemies list.[6] IJR reported that the closure further narrows space for independent reporting amid the Kremlin's crackdown on dissenting media.[7]
