Christa Pike describes constant pain in first statement since failed execution
Christa Pike, a Tennessee death row inmate sentenced to die for murdering her classmate Colleen Slemmer, issued her first public statement since surviving a botched lethal injection last month.[3, 6, 24] In a statement released through her attorneys on Friday, Pike said there has not been a moment since that night when she has not been in pain.[14, 21] She described "pain in my mind and in my soul," said she went into the chamber prepared to die but woke up alone and confused in a hospital bed, and blamed "incompetence" for what happened.[1, 5, 24]
Why it matters Pike remains on death row and still faces the death penalty despite surviving the execution attempt.[3, 5]
