Oil posts biggest drop in months on US-Iran diplomacy hopes
Oil prices fell sharply Monday, with Brent crude dropping more than 6% to as low as $105.55 a barrel, its lowest level since October 16.[1] The fall came as the U.S. and Iran signaled a willingness to pursue diplomacy and a draft of a peace agreement circulated.[2, 3, 8 +1] Iran's foreign minister said discussions with Qatari mediators over a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz were continuing but had not produced an agreement, according to ICANA.[10]
Iran's president said the supreme leader gave the government 'certain authorities.'[4] President Trump touted the drop during his closing pitch to voters the day before the midterm elections, saying Iran 'wants a settlement.'[7, 11] The American Conservative reported that Iran struck two more tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday.[9]
