Kimi Antonelli becomes youngest Formula 1 champion at 20
Kimi Antonelli became the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, clinching his first title at 20 years old.[3, 7, 8] Max Verstappen won the race after a hard-fought battle with Lewis Hamilton, who started from pole.[4, 8] Verstappen seized control during the only pitstop of the race on lap 28 of 71, leapfrogging early leader Charles Leclerc, and fended off Hamilton to take victory.[4]
Motorsport.com reported Antonelli claimed the title at 20 years and 68 days, beating Sebastian Vettel's record.[9] RaceFans reported Antonelli is the first driver in 44 years to win his first race and the championship in the same year.[11] Verstappen said he is "very proud" of Antonelli after the historic title win.[9]
