Manchester United lose 3-0 to Bournemouth as board holds talks on Carrick's future
Manchester United lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League, extending their winless run to eight games.[1, 2, 7] Manager Michael Carrick dropped captain Bruno Fernandes for the match, days after the midfielder criticised his tactics following a 4-1 loss to Como.[2, 3] Carrick told Sky Sports the decision was "pure football", and Fernandes remained an unused substitute.[3, 7]
The Guardian reported that United's hierarchy are in crisis talks over whether to sack Carrick, with Bournemouth's Eddie Howe the top candidate of director of football Jason Wilcox.[1] Al Jazeera reported that fans cheered Carrick after the loss but booed Fernandes, while BBC News said supporters sang for the manager during the defeat.[4, 5] ESPN wrote that whoever replaces Carrick would face the same underperforming squad, and BBC News said the owners' problems are far bigger than the manager.[5, 6]
