El-Sayed's 60 Minutes answers spark clash over trans athletes clip

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed was interviewed Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes" by correspondent Ross Douthat.[4, 5] El-Sayed said he's "not running to govern sports" when pressed on transgender athletes, calling the issue a distraction from economic issues, Fox News reported.[3] The Daily Wire reported El-Sayed answered "yes" without hesitation when asked whether Palestine has a right to exist, but said conditions had to be met when asked about Israel's right to exist.[5]

The Western Journal reported El-Sayed refused to state unequivocally that Israel has a right to exist.[7] Mediaite reported that Republican commentators and lawmakers erupted online over what it called a selectively edited clip of El-Sayed discussing transgender athletes.[2] Truthout described the interview as an anti-trans "gotcha" moment El-Sayed did not fall for.[1]

Why it matters The race is a highly contested Senate seat in Michigan, and Truthout argued a win would show embracing anti-trans views is not required to win.[1]
