New York archdiocese agrees to $800 million settlement with 1,300 clergy abuse survivors
The Archdiocese of New York and attorneys for about 1,300 people who said they were sexually abused by clergy members and lay leaders have agreed to an $800 million settlement of their legal claims.[2, 3, 6] The Guardian reported the archdiocese is finalizing a settlement of at least $800 million, citing one of the plaintiffs' attorneys.[2] Archbishop Ronald Hicks sent an email Saturday to clergy confirming the settlement after attorneys for the survivors announced it.[5, 6]
Yahoo News reported it is the second-largest settlement involving a Catholic archdiocese in the U.S.[6] Al Jazeera reported the largest was an $880 million deal reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024.[7] Mediaite reported the archdiocese pursued the settlement with 1,300 plaintiffs in a bid to avoid bankruptcy.[4]
Why it matters The settlement would resolve a long legal fight over the abuse claims, according to a plaintiff's attorney.[2]
