Fed holds interest rates steady days before midterm elections
The Federal Reserve voted Wednesday to hold interest rates steady at its final meeting before the midterm elections, keeping the federal funds rate at 3.75%-4%.[24, 34, 35] The vote was 10-2, with Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Fed Governor Lisa Cook dissenting in favor of a hike.[19, 35] The central bank raised rates by a quarter point last month for the first time in three years.[1, 14]
President Donald Trump has demanded that the Fed lower rates but has been repeatedly rebuffed, including by Chairman Kevin Warsh.[4] Warsh said after the decision that politics played no role in it.[8] Investors widely expect the Fed to raise rates by a quarter point at its next meeting in December.[3, 18, 31]
Why it matters Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh announced the central bank will change its meeting calendar starting next year, including fewer rate-setting votes.[6, 28]
