DoorDash to buy Instacart for $17 billion
DoorDash announced Thursday it will acquire grocery delivery rival Instacart in a deal valued at about $17 billion.[12, 13, 14] DoorDash will pay $65 per Instacart share, a 26% premium over the stock's Oct. 22 closing price, with the transaction including 75% cash, Yahoo News and Forbes reported.[7, 14] The acquisition combines the country's largest restaurant delivery service with its biggest online grocery platform, according to The New York Times.[2]
Instacart will keep its brand name and app, and Instacart shoppers can continue fulfilling orders, DoorDash said, according to The Guardian and The Hill.[1, 12] The acquisition received unanimous approval from Instacart's board of directors, The Hill reported.[12] The firms said Instacart shoppers will be able to buy from 150,000 stores, compared with 100,000 currently available on the platform, the BBC reported.[18]
