FTC and 20 states sue Dollar General over alleged overcharging
The Federal Trade Commission and 20 states sued Dollar General, alleging the retailer repeatedly charged customers more at checkout than prices shown on shelves or in advertisements.[5, 9, 12] The complaint, filed Monday in federal court in Nashville, says the practices generated millions of dollars in overcharges at the chain's more than 20,000 stores.[1, 10, 12] The FTC and states allege Dollar General failed to correct the problem despite tens of thousands of consumer complaints and what the complaint calls extensive corporate knowledge.[6, 10]
The lawsuit seeks to stop the practices and recover monetary relief and penalties; Dollar General did not immediately respond, according to IJR.[12] The Guardian reported that the lawsuit cites its 2025 investigation and alleges a pattern of inaccurate pricing affecting millions of purchases.[1]
