Grand jury declines to indict ex-Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson
A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. declined to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over her testimony about the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, according to multiple outlets.[2, 5, 7 +1] Prosecutors sought charges based on claims she had made false statements, MS NOW reported; ABC News reported the charges were lying to Congress.[1, 5]
At a brief hearing, a Justice Department lawyer told a magistrate judge the grand jury "had not concurred" in a proposed indictment, The Washington Post reported.[2] Mediaite reported the rejection came despite urging from President Trump.[9]
Why it matters The refusal is another setback for the Justice Department's efforts to prosecute people President Trump believes have wronged him.[6, 11, 13]
