Serbian student movement wins election, Vucic concedes defeat
Serbia's student-led movement won a landslide victory in snap parliamentary elections on Sunday, and longtime leader Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat.[3, 7] The Washington Examiner reported that the vote ended his time in power after he led the Serbian Progressive Party from 2012, became prime minister in 2014 and president in 2017.[10] The New York Post reported that turnout on October 25 more than doubled compared with the previous election, driven by a protest movement that formed after a deadly 2024 train station collapse in Novi Sad.[8]
Breitbart reported that Vucic argued the winning movement was backed by the same "deep American state" that works "against President Trump," and vowed to return.[6] The Washington Times and ABC News reported that the movement faces tough challenges in turning promises of democratic reforms into reality as it prepares to take power.[2, 9]
Why it matters The winning student movement has demanded an overhaul of media outlets it viewed as mouthpieces of Vucic.[3]
