Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado returns from exile
Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado returned to Caracas after months in exile, greeted by crowds of supporters.[1, 4, 8 +1] She had spent more than 10 months abroad after escaping the country on a speedboat, according to the BBC.[18] Thousands lined the streets of Caracas to welcome her back, Al Jazeera reported.[17]
Her return raised expectations among supporters for a shift back to democracy, Bloomberg reported.[4] Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Trump administration told Venezuela's interim authorities weeks earlier that Machado should be allowed to return without interference, as the country prepares for elections next year.[6, 14]
The New York Times reported that Machado, who is seeking new elections, will need to avoid offending the Trump administration while asserting her own leadership.[2] TIME reported she remained sidelined from negotiations over the country's democratic transition.[11]
