Putin holds call with Finland and Norway leaders on Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin held phone talks with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre about prospects for a peace deal in Ukraine.[1, 3] It was the first contact between European leaders and Putin in more than a year, according to the Financial Times and BBC News.[6, 7] The call came as Russia and Ukraine prepare for US-brokered peace talks, the Financial Times reported.[7]
Al Jazeera reported that strikes hit a major bridge in Kyiv as the leaders pushed for direct discussions to end the war.[5] Danish and Estonian officials expressed skepticism over the call, with Estonian Foreign Affairs Minister Margus Tsahkna writing on X that only increased pressure on Russia will make it take peace negotiations seriously.[2]
