Congo Ebola cases top 10,000 as nurse killed by mob
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases, reaching 10,060 according to government data.[6, 7] Nearly half of the people confirmed to have the virus have died, and The Hill reported it is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history.[6, 9] A nurse treating Ebola patients was killed by a machete-wielding mob, Sky News and Bloomberg reported.[4, 10]
Bloomberg said the killing came amid violence against health workers responding to the outbreak, according to the government and United Nations.[4] The Daily Beast reported the epidemic has spread across five countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and France.[2] Response teams are battling armed conflict, poor infrastructure and hostility from communities suspicious of health workers, The Daily Beast reported.[2]
