Neil Young sues Trump committee for $10 million over rally song use
Neil Young filed a $10 million copyright infringement lawsuit Monday against President Trump's political committee, the Trump 47 Committee Inc., over its use of "Rockin' in the Free World" at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio.[3, 4, 7 +1] Young alleges the committee played the song without permission despite a settlement from six years ago in which Trump agreed not to use it again without a license.[4, 9, 12] He is seeking $10 million in damages and an injunction barring future use, saying the song's use falsely suggests his support for Trump.[9]
The Hill reported that Young filed the suit against the Trump 47 Committee on Monday, and NBC News noted it is the second time the artist has sued over Trump's use of his music.[6, 7] Young, 80, is a longtime critic of the president, according to The Guardian and HuffPost.[1, 4]
