US military says strike on alleged drug boat in eastern Pacific killed five
The US military said it killed five people in an airstrike on a suspected drug-trafficking vessel in the eastern Pacific.[1, 2, 4 +1] The Guardian reported the strike was among more than 70 such attacks since the beginning of Donald Trump's second presidency, according to media tallies.[1] Task & Purpose reported the attack was at least the third deadly strike carried out by US Southern Command this month.[3]
Task & Purpose and the New York Post reported the campaign's boat strikes have killed at least 240 people; Al Jazeera put the toll at 243 since September 2025.[3, 4, 5] Al Jazeera described the campaign as decried as extrajudicial killings.[5] Donald Trump has sought to justify the attacks by saying they stem the flow of drugs into the US, but critics have questioned the overall legality of the boat strikes as well as their effectiveness, PBS NewsHour reported.[2]
