Judge blocks further tree cutting at Trump's D.C. golf course renovation
A federal judge extended a block on tree removal at East Potomac Golf Course in Washington, D.C., where President Trump is seeking a renovation, and imposed new notice requirements on further changes.[4, 11, 19 +1] U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes granted a preliminary injunction sought by a preservationist group and golfers, barring the Trump administration from cutting more trees and requiring 10 days' notice before major changes.[19, 28, 29] More than 400 trees had already been removed with little notice, according to IJR.[23]
Reyes wrote, "The Court still does not speak for the trees. It speaks only for the rule of law," according to CBS News.[14] NBC News reported that the judge noted Trump's social media posts contradicted sworn testimony from multiple government officials.[17]
Trump called the ruling unconstitutional, vowed an immediate appeal, and said the project would proceed, according to Forbes and Bloomberg.[13, 15] Newsweek reported that Trump also said people were being hit with golf balls.[18]
Why it matters The order requires the government to give 10 days' notice before closing or altering the golf course property.[23, 27, 28]
