Oleshky ceasefire holds and is extended across Kherson region
A localized ceasefire brokered by first lady Melania Trump took effect early Tuesday in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine's Kherson region.[1, 6, 11 +1] Officials later said the truce was extended across Ukraine's Kherson region, and Russia and Ukraine reported no breaches.[23] The Guardian reported the truce appeared to be holding, with both sides ceasing drone attacks, ahead of an apparent evacuation of about 2,000 trapped civilians.[3]
The pause is designed to allow humanitarian aid into the city, where residents have run out of food and been cut off from medicine, and to evacuate those who want to leave.[4, 11, 18 +1] Melania Trump announced last week that she had secured the temporary humanitarian agreement, saying the situation in Oleshky "is dire."[11, 15, 21]
Fighting continued elsewhere: Russia struck Kyiv multiple times Monday night, hours before the ceasefire took effect, and missile attacks resumed there Tuesday.[2, 8, 16 +1] Both Moscow and Kyiv expressed optimism about the ceasefire as it took effect, according to The Washington Examiner.[21]
Why it matters The truce is meant to let humanitarian aid reach residents cut off from food and medicine and allow an evacuation of about 2,000 trapped civilians.[3, 4, 24]
