Trump and Rubio to visit tanker of Venezuelan crude in Texas
President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio planned to visit a newly arrived oil tanker filled with Venezuelan crude in Texas on Tuesday.[1, 2, 4] The tanker was carrying 1 million barrels of Venezuelan oil, which Trump said Venezuela sent him as a 'gift'.[4, 6] The oil is to be processed in Texas refineries.[4]
A White House official said, 'This will be the first of the billions of barrels to come from this deal.'[5] The Washington Examiner reported the event was organized to tout efforts to revitalize Venezuela's oil industry, increase supply to the United States, and bring down prices.[6]
Bloomberg reported the visit came a week before US midterm elections, and Newsweek noted high gas prices remain a concern for voters.[2, 3] Al Jazeera reported the president sought to highlight the Venezuela operation as affordability became a key midterm issue.[7]
