Qatari mediators hold marathon Tehran talks on US-Iran deal
A Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday for talks with senior Iranian officials, Iranian state media reported.[2] Qatari mediators held talks in Tehran for more than 12 hours, seeking a deal to restart direct negotiations between the US and Iran and avoid an outbreak of war after the midterms, according to diplomatic sources cited by Axios.[1] The Financial Times reported the talks are a last-ditch effort to broker an interim deal ahead of next week's US midterm elections.[9]
Iran is considering a proposal involving nuclear inspections and sanctions relief, the International Business Times reported.[5] The Washington Times reported the visit came days after Vice President JD Vance sent a letter requesting a resumption of direct negotiations; The American Conservative reported Iran has yet to respond to the letter.[7, 8] Breitbart reported that five days earlier, Iranian officials had called a Qatari peace proposal "unacceptable."[6]
Why it matters The talks aim to prevent a new round of war between the US and Iran, with a possible US military operation days away, according to Axios.[1]
