Alphabet loses about $500 billion in market value after earnings miss
Alphabet shares plunged Thursday, erasing roughly $500 billion in market value after the Google parent's third-quarter earnings missed expectations.[9, 15, 16] Revenue rose 25% year over year to $127.6 billion, but net profit slid 25% from a year earlier to $26.2 billion, according to TechCrunch and The Guardian.[2, 32] The Guardian reported the profit miss came alongside a slowdown in the advertising business; HuffPost reported ad revenue of $82.01 billion, about $1.41 billion short of expectations.[1, 2]
Capital expenditures hit a record $51.4 billion and free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion, Fortune reported.[10] Google Cloud revenue more than doubled to about $31 billion, while search revenue grew 12%, slower than expected, The Decoder reported.[10, 33]
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company's AI investments are driving overall search query growth, including commercial queries.[35] Google acknowledged that its fast-growing AI mode brings in less revenue than traditional search and is expanding its AI search ads program internationally, The Decoder and TechCrunch reported.[32, 33]
Why it matters The drop is the second-biggest one-day market cap loss ever for a US-listed company, behind only Nvidia's roughly $593 billion loss in January 2025.[16]
