Hong Kong leader apologizes for fire that killed 168
Hong Kong leader John Lee apologized Thursday for a residential fire that killed 168 people last year, announcing the city's housing secretary would step down.[2, 4, 6] An investigation into the fire, the deadliest in Hong Kong in decades, found inadequate regulatory oversight and corruption.[3, 6] The blaze at Wang Fuk Court was the deadliest housing fire globally since 1980, according to The Guardian.[1]
Lee defended the government while apologizing for shortcomings that contributed to the fire.[1, 2] Some former residents and victims' families said they still need justice and were not satisfied by the apology.[1, 5]
