Inflation rose in September as GDP grew faster than expected
A Federal Reserve-watched inflation gauge accelerated in September, rising 0.5% for the month and 3.6% from a year earlier, up from 3.4% in August.[5, 7, 10] Core inflation rose by 3.1%, according to UPI, citing Bureau of Economic Analysis data.[8] The report came a day after the Federal Reserve's decision to hold interest rates steady.[1]
Rising gas prices drove much of the increase as renewed violence in the Middle East has kept oil prices above $100 a barrel, PBS NewsHour reported, but prices also rose outside fuel costs.[6] Separately, third-quarter gross domestic product grew by an expected-beating 3.4%, per CNBC and UPI.[3, 8]
The data lands less than a week before midterm elections where affordability has become a central issue for voters.[12, 13] Fortune reported that polls show rising inflation has soured most voters on the economy and led them to give President Donald Trump poor marks.[4]
