UN closes its political mission in Somalia after three decades
The United Nations has closed its political mission in Somalia, ending more than three decades of direct political engagement in the country.[1, 2] The closure followed a two-year transition period, according to the mission's website.[1] Somalia hailed the mission's closure as a milestone.[2]
The closure comes amid political tensions and cuts to international support, Al Jazeera reported.[2] Responsibility for peacebuilding, governance and reconciliation is increasingly shifting to Somali institutions, the mission said.[1]
